ABA in Real Life

If you’ve heard of ABA before, your brain might go straight to autism therapy. And yes, ABA is often used in that space, but that’s not the whole picture. At its core, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is about understanding behaviour: what we do, why we do it, and how to make positive changes that stick. Spoiler: that’s useful for everyone, not just in clinical settings.
So… what exactly is ABA? ABA is a science-based approach to learning and behaviour. We look at how the environment influences actions and then use that information to teach new skills, encourage helpful behaviours, and reduce the ones that get in the way. Think of it like hacking the “why” behind what we do, and using that to set students up for success.
And what’s a BCBA? A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) is someone who’s trained to use ABA effectively and ethically. They understand how to assess behaviour, design teaching plans, and track progress in a way that’s actually meaningful. At ESS, our principal is also a BCBA, which means all of our programs get a built-in layer of behavioural expertise without it feeling clinical or intimidating.
How does ABA fit into high school life? In a high school setting, ABA can look a lot like good teaching — because it is. Here are just a few ways it shows up in our day:
Helping students set realistic goals and actually follow through
Teaching study skills and organization in ways that stick
Supporting positive peer relationships and problem-solving
Building independence so students are ready for whatever comes after graduation
Reducing stress and frustration by breaking tasks into doable steps
The best part? ABA strategies blend right into the classroom, group projects, and even casual conversations. Students often don’t even realize they’re learning a skill, they just notice school feels more doable.
At ESS, we use ABA because it works. Whether it’s helping a student tackle a tough course, build confidence, or stay on track toward their goals, we’re here to make the process as smooth and engaging as possible.
